Overview

CAT-TESOL is an international TESOL certification program under CAT UK accreditation structure. As an independent academic body in UK, Cambridge Academy of Translation UK dedicates to building bridges across languages & cultures. CAT-TESOL provides support for international Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages to be professional English teachers through training, assessment & certification.

Vision & Value

Upgrading to international criteria, serving specialized local needs. With CAT-TESOL , great importance is attached to two ends of teacher education: being international & being local. A good TESOL teacher must be familiar with the international language teaching context, principles , criteria & practices. Meanwhile, he must be able to adapt well to the local language teaching, tailoring his TESOL knowledge and visions to cater to variety of English learning needs locally. CAT-TESOL aims to build home, pride & future for TESOL practitioners.

Certification

CAT-TESOL certificate is developed by and granted through the TESOL committee under Cambridge Academy of Translation UK, is recognized internationally, and is chartered under the laws of the United Kingdom. Every certificate carries a line describing the specialized area of the certificate holder.

Theory & System

CAT-TESOL bases its training structure largely on Tricia Hedge, who is a guide to current ideas about the theory and practice of English language teaching and the writer of Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom.

Online & Offline

CAT-TESOL vision of combining the international with the local English language teaching is realized through online + offline training mode. Online course is enjoyed by learners anywhere across the world which guarantees same standards and quality. Meanwhile, offline classroom training specializes in huge variety of local English language learning needs, which helps CAT-TESOL teachers quickly adapt to jobs around.

Assessment & Evaluation

A teacher needs to complete the following to secure a CAT-TESOL certificate: -Complete course study -Write a TESOL study summary, no less than 1000 words in length -Teaching Presentation for at least 30 minutes

Further development:

CAT-TESOL also support its members by CIC, Cambridge International Communications, the language training & testing system developed by Cambridge Academy of Translation UK in accordance with the Common European Framework. With level 1 through level 8, CIC helps teachers and schools to develop and organize their English language trainings.

[Tricia Hedge & Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom]

Tricia Hedge believes that although there are huge differences in the way that English is taught around the world, teachers typically find themselves having to face similar issues. What do I set up as aims for my next lesson with this class and what kind of activities will help to achieve those aims? How do I deal with this reading text in class? What amount of out-of-class work can I reasonably expect my learners to do? How do I make best use of a textbook I am not entirely happy with? These are just a few examples of the many questions typically asked by teachers which she addresses in this book.

Although insights from research can help, there are no 'right answers' provided. Instead, the aim is to give you a solid foundation of knowledge which you can use to evaluate and apply your own ideas about teaching and learning.

The book is organized into four parts.

- Part One ('A framework for teaching and learning') looks at insights from research into learners, learning, and language in use and discusses how these have influenced methodology and materials in ELT. Specific topics covered include: the use of communicative tasks in the classroom, the concept of learner strategies and how you can train your students to develop them, the growth of interactive methodology and its consequences in changing the roles of teacher and learner.

- Part Two ('Teaching the language system') focuses on vocabulary and grammar, and Part Three ('Developing the language skills') on the traditional four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There is also discussion of how these different areas fit together.

- Part Four ('Planning and assessing learning') moves on to wider issues. Chapter 10 on course design refers back to topics covered earlier in the book. Chapter 11 deals with the relationship between teaching and different forms of assessment.
